Suns 2022 Off-Season Thread
Re: Suns Off-Season Thread
Monty has been great, I’m all for locking him up!
Re: Suns Off-Season Thread
There’s a zero percent chance that both DA and Monty will finish out their contracts on the Suns.

Re: Suns Off-Season Thread
How about letting him prove he can coach in the playoffs before locking him up? He’s been out-coached in basically every playoff series we’ve had (Bucks and Mavs obviously, but certainly Clippers and Pelicans also, we just had way more talent).

Re: Suns Off-Season Thread
Didn't have big man depth against the Bucks. Didn't have guard depth all season this year. Monty can't coach those deficiencies into existence.
What is smallball? I play basketball. I'm not a regular big man. I can switch from the center to the guards. The game is evolving. I'd be dominAyton if the WNBA would let me in. - Ayton
Re: Suns Off-Season Thread
Ya I think the Dallas series was rough for him but I wouldn’t say he was out coached anywhere else. He was limited by the roster.
My thing is do we really want to go back to an Igor or Hornacek or Gentry when we have a small title window open right now?
Unless there’s a no doubt better coach available, you don’t just ditch a top tier coach. He’s also not like a player where his salary impacts the cap. We can just cut him if we want and hire a new one. For all those, it’s not my money why would I care if Ayton gets a max people, it’s even more true for Monty.

Re: Suns Off-Season Thread
Williams was one of the best things to happen to this team in a long time. He is a leader of men. He is still a work in progress and he'll tell you that. It is not necessary that he has all the tools. You hire solid assistants to help out and fill in the gaps. Losing Green was a big loss that hasn't been talked about enough.

Good for Coach Monty. He isn't perfect, but he's done a splendid job here so far. And players like playing for him; he actively makes some players want to come here. He's been just what this team has needed, and I'm happy to hear that we extended him. The grass isn't always greener on the other side.

It's not my money, but a long-term extension makes it more likely they will overlook his deficiencies and less likely they will move on from him when they should. I'm not saying to fire him right now. They could wait another year before extending him, though. It's not like his contract was expiring.Split T wrote: ↑Sat Jul 23, 2022 9:47 amYa I think the Dallas series was rough for him but I wouldn’t say he was out coached anywhere else. It’s just funny that you didn’t have that same opinion about Deandre when we didn’t extend him last summer.

From the ESPN article:
It's also interesting to see in the video of his coach of the year presentation from his team that DA leads the break at the end. He mentions "marinization". Did he mean meritization? Even the CC didn't know. After that sentence he says, "Do you understand?" No, DA. We do not.Williams' impact on the Suns' organization has been profound, including a trip to the 2021 NBA Finals and a franchise-record 64 regular-season victories last season. Williams has gone 149-78 (.656) in his three seasons and delivered accountability and purpose to a wayward Suns' program, transforming a team that had won 19 games prior to his arrival into one of the league's best teams.
The Suns last season joined the 1969-70 New York Knicks as the only teams to finish with a better road victory percentage than every other team's home victory percentage in a season. The Suns were 47-0 when leading after three quarters -- the best in the shot-clock era. The only two other teams that went undefeated in that scenario in the regular season both included LeBron James -- the 2017-18 Cleveland Cavaliers and the 2019-20 Los Angeles Lakers.

And yeah, DA always leads the huddle. I was going to say a few weeks ago, if DA leaves, who's gonna lead the huddle?

Re: Suns Off-Season Thread
Ya gotta start somewhere. Usually, it's not in the Finals like the year before. Golden State set the all-time regular season record and didn't win the championship. But then they added KD and won it all the next year. Sound familiar?JeremyG wrote: ↑Sat Jul 23, 2022 10:29 am"Among the Suns' regular-season dominance last season:" I've had enough regular season dominance to last me a lifetime! He always says to "let it marinate" at the end of a huddle (meaning, soak it in/wait awhile before breaking the huddle), but he usually changes the word to "marinatate" or something similar to make it funny.

And thank you for the DA translation. I should have known that YOU of all people would be able to decipher DA-speak!

They did seem to have great team chemistry still in that video and that was the day before game 5 of the Dallas series. I wonder what happened after game 5.

Yes, that's what I meant by expiring. And Monty has two years left.

Re: Suns Off-Season Thread
It's in part a reward for what he's done in getting the team back to respectability.
But we all know coaches are hired to be fired. There's a good chance he won't make it the length of the contract but with coaches you don;t have to worry about carrying dead salaries on the cap.
Let's hope we're all looking back when he gets his next extension and think this was a bargain though.
