I meant in a fantasy world where we didn't have to match the salaries for cap purposes and could just trade player-for-player.
You think that would improve the team, or you just want to save money?

I think this max contract talk about Ayton’s deal is a problem. Yes it’s a max contract, but it’s “only” $30 million a year. We just saw Jalen Brown sign a contract that will pay him over $60 million per year. When Ayton signed the contract it may have been too much, but it’s starting to look like a bargain.

Fair point…though it’s 34 million a year left for Ayton and 57 million a year for Brown. Ayton will make 34 and 36 during Browns first two years at 49/53. So 15-17 million a year more. It’s not double and I still wouldn’t call it a bargain. Not if Ayton plays like he did last year.

It’s just semantics, but a 5 year, $303.7 million contract has to mean he is making $60 per year at some point.

I looked it up and got this from ESPN:
“Brown averaged career bests of 26.6 points and 49% shooting last season. He will make $31.8 million next season in the final year of his previous deal.

Brown is slated to make $52.3 million when the contract kicks in during the 2024-25 season and $69.1 million in 2028-29, the final year of the deal.”

The same argument can be be made down the line when "player x" (SGA?) is making almost twice as much as Brown. It's just how the CBA and salary cap are structured.

The issue with Ayton's contract has always been value based. At least with someone like Brown there are literal achievements he had to obtain to be offered his upcoming salary.

Ya he’ll go over 60 the last two years of the deal…it still depends a little on where the cap falls in 2024-25. That will decide the starting number. But yes, the deal won’t look bad if Ayton plays like he’s capable of. My worry is he repeats last year. Just gotta hope his relationship with Monty was the reason he was generally uninterested last year.

What does everybody think of this statement by Ayton? Is it a slam on his Suns teammates? Or is he just exuberant in the moment while representing his country?

Synchronicity and all that jazz, man.

Just exuberant. It's different when you represent your home country vs some professional team away from home.

Either way, at least we know he likes one of his Suns teammates. :P

Apologies if this has been posted elsewhere or before but came across this interesting discussion with Garnett and Paul Pierce about the Suns and Ayton in particular:

I love how Jock tells Gerald at the end: "Take it easy on my guy DA this year. Looks like he's had a good offseason."

Is KG’s take still crazy?

What a “DPOY”—his team gives up 113 points in 40 minutes lol.

Meanwhile, Ayton leads his country to a tournament championship with 21 rebounds in the final alone, and gets put down for it.

Maybe he’s holding out till he signs his endorsement deal with “soft n gentle”…. 😉
