It was more about Ayton personally than paying a 3rd option the max. Ayton became much harder to trade on that max deal and we’ve seen at least 1 team say no thanks(2 if you believe Washington didn’t want him). I do cringe with OG getting his max(44 million), that’s too much, but there is one other key difference as well. We already have our 3 stars on supermax deals. Paying someone else a bunch of money now doesn’t impact our ability to pay other players. We won’t have money to spend regardless, so this is literally just coming out of Ishbia’s pocket. I also have more confidence that he’ll spend. Ayton was signing a max under Sarver.
All Things Ayton

Re: All Things Ayton
There's no way you pay OG more than $22-$25/year on his next contract.
Re: All Things Ayton
100%.... You'd think but the market for players, compounded by the salary cap increases year over year keep these players salaries astronomical. It's mind-blowing.
Am I wrong to think of OG as kinda like Bridges? They seem like very similar players from what I've gathered from reading on this forum. If that's the case wouldn't he be worth similar value as Bridges? I think you're pretty dead on Shel.
Re: All Things Ayton
Because he's one the best perimeter defenders in the NBA and definitely one of the few who can guard 5 positions. He's someone you can put on Giannis or Curry. That versatility unlocks some exciting potential lineup combinations.SunsRIt wrote: ↑Wed Sep 27, 2023 5:47 amWhy is everyone so enthralled by Anunoby? He is a 17 and 5 guy in his best year and he has been in the league for 6 years. Ayton is an 18 and 10 guy when he is sleepwalking. And Nurkic is a few steps back that can’t even be played in the playoffs. And you’re talking about having to max Anunoby with those numbers? Why is this a discussion?
Re: All Things Ayton
He didn’t have a single game with 8 or fewer points and 6 or fewer rebounds in the 2023 playoffs, and had only one game with that combined PTSREBS amount of 14 or lower.Split T wrote: ↑Wed Sep 27, 2023 6:27 amYou are getting hung up on box score numbers that don’t mean much. In the regular season (not counting the couple games where he left early in the game with injuries), he had a total of 3 games with 8/6 or worse (2 of which were blowout wins). (5 total games with the combined 14 or worse.)
So this proves that either you think he is way worse than he actually is, or you’re admitting that he only sleepwalked for around 3 to 5 games last year.

Mmm. It's good horse soup. Not chunky in the least. I've never had such tender horse meat before.
Synchronicity and all that jazz, man.

It was an exaggeration…let’s say 12/8…he can sleepwalk his way to that. Had 13 of those games last year(counting playoffs).JeremyG wrote: ↑Wed Sep 27, 2023 10:40 amHe didn’t have a single game with 8 or fewer points and 6 or fewer rebounds in the 2023 playoffs, and had only one game with that combined PTSREBS amount of 14 or lower.Split T wrote: ↑Wed Sep 27, 2023 6:27 amYou are getting hung up on box score numbers that don’t mean much. He’s certainly not an 18/10 guy in his sleep. He only did that 24 times in 77 games(including playoffs).
Re: All Things Ayton
Thank you for finally admitting that.
Why would I believe something 100% contrary to the facts? Washington asked for Ayton and Phoenix refused to give him up.
Also, show me any evidence that we offered Ayton to Brooklyn?
Just this summer you were saying that we shouldn’t keep Ayton at the max as a 4th option because we needed more depth, and that we needed to get below the second apron. Now all the sudden none of that matters because it’s OG instead of DA?Split T wrote: ↑Wed Sep 27, 2023 10:18 amI do cringe with OG getting his max(44 million), that’s too much, but there is one other key difference as well. Nice. So 8 out of the 10 playoff games he did not sleepwalk, and the only 2 games where he sleepwalked were both Suns wins.Split T wrote: ↑Wed Sep 27, 2023 10:56 amIt was an exaggeration…let’s say 12/8…he can sleepwalk his way to that. Re: All Things Ayton
I know you want Ayton gone, but you’re misreading the situation.
The Suns are not shopping Ayton. They are not looking to trade him. Portland highly covets Ayton and wants him included in a Dame deal. The Suns are simply telling Portland that this is going nowhere if you don’t include Sharpe (as an example, per Flex).
They are not going to trade Ayton just to get rid of him. There is no reason to think that anything has changed in this regard from July. In fact, the opposite is likely true: the Suns value him even more after the Bahamas tournament.

As for Washington and Ayton…it depends on how you interpret the reports. But that’s why I listed it with a disclaimer. Also there was tons of reports that Brooklyn had no interest in Ayton, I’m not going to dig them up. You can find them if you want.
And yes, my idea for getting depth was to trade him for multiple pieces and waive CP3 to be able to use the exceptions. I didn’t expect Beal and the vet min signings we pulled off..

(Not necessarily your obligation to defend the idea, J; I understand you’re just reporting what Flex said.)
