How did you react to being told you were a pedophile?Cap wrote: ↑Sun Dec 10, 2023 4:39 pmOne of my Zipps “friends” showed up in a Trump shirt and I asked him about it. He said Democrats are pedophiles. He said he is absolutely 100% certain of that. I pointed out that all the evidence available says the opposite. He said we have a “two-tiered justice system” that targets conservatives while protecting the real pedophiles.
Clearly no point in trying to talk about policy or the health of democracy with such a mentality. It is a matter of religious faith that liberals are pure evil, that everything we do and stand for is evil, and that absolutely nothing is unjustified in the name of destroying this evil. Safe to say he won’t complain when Trump starts executing us “pedophiles.”
He might start complaining when he himself is executed for being Mexican, but by then it will be too late.

It wasn’t pleasant. I tried to rebut it but ran straight into “absence of evidence is evidence of a coverup” mentality. He did continue to refer to leftists and Democrats in the third person after I said I was one.

Re: Trump 2024
I've had this experience many times in the last few years. You're trying to talk about some issue with somebody, and you realize that they have conspiracy brain, that they don't trust anything or anyone, that any fact or data or evidence you show them is just bounced off them. "Well that's just the media, that's what they WANT you to think, you can't trust xyz, you can't trust info from that source, I've seen numbers on both sides," etc. They live in an environment where any undesired information can just be summarily dismissed as fake or biased or unreal or whatever. You can't reason with them.

So we don't like it when Presidents or Presidential candidates mistreat classified documents, right? Like if they store them on an email server, or just make off with them without telling anybody?

JML: I’ve said publicly, many times, that the former president and his Republican allies instigated a war on American democracy on Jan. 6. And that in so doing, they have corrupted American democracy and our elections, to the extent that, today, millions and millions of Americans no longer have faith and confidence in American democracy and in our elections.
It’s evident that the former president and his allies are going to prosecute that war against democracy to its catastrophic end, and if the former president were to be elected, again, to the office of the president, then I believe that that would be regrettable, for American democracy and the rule of law.

Removing the leading candidate of the opposition party is "saving democracy"? Interesting thought experiment. What's the saying? "The beatings will continue until morale improves"?

It's also interesting that this is happening at the same time. It's literally the Reconciliation monument.

California and Colorado removing him from the ballot does nothing. He wasn’t winning those states anyway. It’s a publicity stunt. Now, if a Republican or swing state does it - now you’re getting my attention
Re: Trump 2024
I've heard that up to 13 states are looking to remove him from the ballot too. Now, what if red states decide to do the same thing with Biden? Is this type of behavior actually good for democracy? I have a hard time seeing that as a good thing.

Re: Trump 2024
Trump lost the election and tried to stay in power by doing the same things he always does in his storied life. Lie and cheat a lot. He was willing to destroy Democracy in the US to stay in power and he didn’t care how many people were hurt by his lies. No one on planet earth believes his election lies except his supporters and I seriously doubt if all of them really believe him or just are willing to stand by his lies. He is the leading candidate on the GOP side. It doesn’t make him any less of an evil traitor to his country.

Re: Trump 2024
A good read on the Colorado decision. Conway argues that one of the most convincing arguments for the decision is found by reading the dissents against it, which he says are flimsy and unpersuasive. The 14th Amendment clearly states that no officer of the government should be able to hold public office if he engages in an insurrection against the country. Trump clearly and absolutely did do that. He should never be allowed to hold public office again.
Re: Trump 2024
SCOTUS will apply their unique brand of originalism. “The authors/ratifiers of the Amendment didn’t address this scenario, so that means we get to decide what they would have thought about it. Naturally, they would have agreed with us that Trump should be President.”

If you try to hold Trump accountable, a flood of his supporters threaten to kill you.
Re: Trump 2024
Unless the ballot changes, he’s gonna win…. I’d argue removing him from the ballot will only make things worse for the Dems. Saucy is 100% right…. California and Colorado don’t mean squat since he wasn’t winning those states anyway. Now if Florida or Texas does it, then it becomes a bipartisan decision.

Re: Trump 2024
Yes, but I think we're talking about apples and oranges. Colorado barred Trump from the ballot because he literally tried to overrule an election by organizing a violent insurrection, including getting thousands of his supporters to storm our capitol building and try to find and kill the vice president among others. The Constitution specifically lays out an Amendment barring people who support insurrection from being on the ballot. Whether you support CO's ruling or not, there's a clear line that would argue that what Trump did meets the standard of being barred from office / from the ballot.
Joe Biden ... doesn't have immigration policies that are strong enough to please GOP voters? These are the same?? That's a policy issue. Trump didn't get barred from CO because he cut taxes too much, or because his Wall idea was mean, or because he canceled the Iran nuclear deal, or whatever. It wasn't because of any of his various policies. It was for trying to overthrow the government and stay in office after losing an election.

Re: Trump 2024
If some super ambitious prosecutor or state AG decides that they want to push novel legal theory, they could make the case that Joe Biden with his immigration policies is an insurrection, since most of the people coming over aren't "families seaking assylum", but instead are military aged men without families. Or, they could turn things around and say that they have seen enough voter fraud from the 2020 to say that an insurrection took place on November 3rd at the direction of Joe Biden to overthrow the government in a soft coup. They could even use some of these clips of Joe admitting it, along with the Sunrise papers that came out and was wargamed by the Dems prior to the election.Mori Chu wrote: ↑Thu Dec 21, 2023 8:04 amYes, but I think we're talking about apples and oranges.
