Sad News. Shumate didn't play for the Suns for long. He missed his rookie season (1974-75) because of blood clots on his lungs and spent time helping Al McCoy out in the broadcasting booth. Midway through his second season he was traded to Bufflo for Gar Heard, which was the trad they pulled everything together for the Suns that year.

Shumate played college basketball for Notre Dame where he was a 1st Team All-Alerican his serior year. He was also on the Notre Dame team with Adrian Dantley that snapped UCLA's 88-game win streak. After college Shumate was the 4th pick in the 1974 draft by the Suns and played five years in the league with the Suns, Braves, Pistons, Rockets and Spurs, despite losing two seasons (1974-75 and 1978-79) to the blood clots on his lungs.

After his playing career ended Shumate went into coaching as a volunteer assistant at Notre Dame, and then went on to coach at Grand Canyon, Southern Methodist and for the Phoenix Mercury (he was also a Suns assistant under Alvin Gentry).

Shumate also appeared in the cult classic basketball movie "The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh."
