Does anyone feel up for another go around with Monty Williams...?

Post by Charlie Smithy! »

... presumably with the same .5 offense, less individual player kerfuffles, and maybe less extinction level events in the playoffs🤞

But yeah, Superbone and I were talking offline, and I felt like he made a good point when he told me that we really haven't played good basketball since Monty left.

At any rate, he/we thought it was worth running this past the board and see what y'all think.

Repeating this here:

Bring Monty Williams back. That's the last time we played good basketball. Vogel and Bud have been busts. We once brought Cotton back to good effect. On the other hand, I don't know if any coach can light a fire under this collection of players' asses (I refuse to call them a team.) These guys have no pride.

I'd rather they go say sorry to Kevin Young.

I do miss the days of Monty. BUT. I do feel like toward the end I found him frustrating. He was horrible at adjustments, both at halftime and as a series went on. So once an opposing team would "figure is out," we were toast. Monty seemed like a great regular season coach, great at building relationships with players, great at getting good effort out of guys through the regular season.

I'm also swayed by how horribly he did with Detroit. That team was almost historically bad under him, and then the moment they boot him and switch to Bickerstaff, they look much better this season. I know that is not 100% Monty, but a lot of it seemed to be his fault. He completely lost that team almost immediately. How do you do that if you're a great coach?

I'm as big a fan of Monty as anyone but I don't know that he's the answer anymore. We don't know what really went down in the playoffs and how things ended with him. And he couldn't work any of his magic in Detroit, not that I think he even wanted that job. This may be a different team next year too, so he may not even fit with the roster at that point. Unfortunately I think we're stuck with Bud, who will be fired eventually and then have Fizdale with an interim tag.

This team, with its vets, needs a strong voice who will challenge players but also have the FO's backing. Vogel and Bud don't have the stones to coach these guys properly. I think Lue or Udoka would be ideal but we're not getting either. It all just depends on what the roster looks like heading into next year. A strong, well regarded assistant who will lead a young team? Or another veteran coach with the right personality who better fits with the players we have or will have after the summer?

No…. Been there, done that. We need to blow it up, coach and all. If we could throw out the owners I’d start there. Man, how the grass hasn’t been much greener with ishbia.

I think we made a mistake firing Monty the first time, but I wouldn’t go back…I don’t know who should be the coach, but we really gotta stop the revolving door of coaches. I’m not anti Bud…he hasn’t exactly impressed me, but I think he’s a bit handicapped by a few things.

Trade KD first…then make the coaching decision…if Bud really isn’t the answer, who’s the Thunder lead assistant? Cavs? Grizzlies? Go get a young up and coming coach…no more retreads

No way would I take a chance on a new owner. We know what a crapshoot that can be. I'll take the guy, who seems to be a decent guy, willing to spend every time. Like Colangelo said, there is a learning curve. Ishbia is learning the hard way. Things will get better in time. As Cap loves to say, he won't allow it not too.

IMO Ishbia's overeagerness and impatience have really fucked us for the next 4-5 years at least. But hopefully he learns from this and settles into being a good owner. Sarver learned a lot over his time as owner, coincidentally after fucking up a great mid-2000s Suns run. Ishbia has had to basically learn similar hard lessons about how to be an NBA owner, after fucking up changes to an NBA Finals team. I do think that after Ishbia gets his bearings and settles down, his willingness to spend and other positive qualities will shine more.

What about the playoffs? What about schemes and in-game adjustments?
You could see a difference, a drop in quality to my eyes.

If we want a great coach for the Suns, there is but one option:
