Daredevil

Post by Dan H »

In a word, fantastic.

They tie into the larger MCU in a very cool way, organized crime has exploded in NYC after the events of "The Avengers." Even lays the seeds for Civil War down the road with the remarks to the money in the property damage the heroes are causing.

It was great. Thought the ending was a bit ho hum but enjoyed the take on Kingpin (tho he's never called that - I think it's coming later.)

I had to Google some of the references in episode 7, and man! It makes me even more excited for the upcoming Netflix shows . . . !

They really did come out the gates swinging with their original programming, and aren't showing any signs of letting up soon. Not shabby for a fairly young "channel."

I'd say it's the future of TV but I can't because no one knows how successful their shows are. We can only guess because Netflix doesn't release their numbers. We just have to take their word for it. What we do know is that Netflix comprises about 35% of all Internet traffic. That's a literal ton. So even if a small fraction tries Daredevil it's a lot.

Any channel you pay for directly has a big advantage over cable channels, which already have a huge advantage over network TV. At the network level, you need to self-censor somewhat. This appears to have become a lot looser over the years, which leads to some higher quality grown up (not porn) entertainment. But once you get into cable, they have so much more leeway...but still nothing like the premium channels or Netflix (and Amazon, if they prove they are up to the challenge). No commercials, because you're already paying for it already, longer run times per show, WAY more creative license to experiment (Amazon's pilot model comes to mind)...so yeah, I agree.

Netflix's policy of releasing a whole season at once is also cool. I know some people who actually don't like it, but I think they are crazy. It gives them the ability to focus even more on the big picture story rather than the episode-level story, because if you binge watch, you aren't going to forget all of those little details that really feed into the overall plot arc. Instead of your traditional three-act play, you get a ten-act epic.

I love it.

Right. The only problem with binge watching for me is that I consume so much media that by the time Season 2 happens (post Defenders apparently so 2017 sometime) I'll have forgotten everything that happens unless I re-watch it. Which I may but that's unlikely because I read 2 books a month plus I buy about 12 monthly comics & belong to 2 separate graphic novel book clubs. I've also seen 50 movies already this year & that does not account for all the TV I watch (roughly 10 shows a week I keep up with. ) I can't even watch everything I want to. There's just too much. Let alone remember everything I see.

Well, I finished that off this morning, at about 7:00 am. Wow. Great show. I am starting to understand why people don't like the binge-release format of Netflix, because normally I'd only have to wait nine months for more.

I would think sooner. It won't be effects heavy and they have been filming for a while. Can I just say I have had a thing for Krysten Ritter for years? She checks all my boxes in that she's not conventionally attractive yet I can't ever take my eyes off her.

Yeah, I think I have a problem. Think of all the basketball & baseball games I watch too. At least with baseball I can read while I watch. Lol. (Been guilty of doing that during some boring ass Suns games too tho.)

I absolutely loved Daredevil. It always has been my favorite comic book, and I can't say enough how great (except for the Ben Urich part) the show is.

I waited until I purchased a 4K TV until I watched this.
I fell asleep during almost every episode. Too much padding.
You could tell it was a low budget production because of all the dialogue.
If the dialogue were on Tarantino levels of dialogue, it would have been great.

That being said, the fight scenes and acrobatics were fantastic, and it was worth watching just for Vincent D'Onofrio's performance as The Kingpin. The picture on a 4K was pretty good, but still seemed a little grainy at times for 4K images. I don't know why that was, everything else in 4K looks outstanding.

I hope they have more of a budget in season 2 and do not require as much padding, or the dialogue writing improves. D'onofrio is so good he could read a phone book and you would hang on every word, but to be fair, his character was the most interesting one in the series to begin with.

One other complaint I had was the actor who played Foggie, at least in the first few episodes, his performance wasn't great. But it did get better as the season progressed. The dialogue padding became more interesting and nuanced as more of the story was revealed for him.

I'd give the series an 8 out of 10 so far, and I am looking forward to next season.

BTW, as a side note, I LOVED Agent Carter. That was a 10 out of 10 for me, and was also low budget. The performances and writing were absolutely PERFECT! The set design, costumes, even the dialogue, with all the cadences and slang of the 40's-50's, was just a joy to watch for me. So far the best of all the comic book shows, Marvel or DC. I couldn't sing Agent Carter's praises loud enough.
Forcing me to conform to your beliefs is an exercise in futility.
You deal with you, because you can't stop me from being me.

The actress that played Jinx in the GI Joe movie has been cast as Electra for Season 2.

I see what you're saying about season 1 being low budget, but consider this - it was really Netflix's first foray into their own genre content. The original shows they had before were all character-driven and didn't need much in the way of special effects budgets. It was 50/50 whether or not it would be successful or not, most people's memories of Daredevil are the awful Affleck movie. I think the fact that it was such a colossal success bodes well not only for Daredevil going forward, but the rest of the Defenders shows they're planning.

You must either sit really close to your screen, or have a 150" screen. I think the 4K resolution only becomes noticeable for people with 20/20 vision if you are 10' away at that size. Even if you only 6' away (which is really close), you need a 70" screen to see minor differences (you need an 8' screen at 6' away to see all of the differences).

My biggest complaint about the binge-release format is that you don't get to have the shared experience like you do with other shows. I love talking about shows I am watching, and it makes it a lot harder. It is easier on message boards when you have threads for each episode, but in real life it just doesn't work.
