Suns News: The Offseason (2016)
Re: Suns News: The Offseason (2016)
I've already posted the Warren & Barnes comparisons. I think it is silly to pay Barnes even the Bledsoe contract with Warren here.

Only way you sign Barnes is if you think he can be your Draymond Green. Undersized 4 who defends and stretches the D.

Love, Hurts.

Bledsoe's gonna get a nastygram from Adam Silver.

I definitely think the Suns see Barnes as a 4 in the offense. May not affect Warren's time. What may affect Warren's time is their thought that Booker could now play the 3.

Why? Players can talk about other players. It's front office people that can't.Cap wrote:Bledsoe's gonna get a nastygram from Adam Silver.

I think Warren is more of a small ball 4 than Barnes is.In2ition wrote:I definitely think the Suns see Barnes as a 4 in the offense. May not affect Warren's time.
Re: Suns News: The Offseason (2016)
We have 4 draft picks, two we have the rights to playing in other leagues, and only a couple of free agents on the roster. If they want to sign a free agent, there will be some dumping of assets.

Again, I like Barnes more than most do. He has more potential for stardom than alot of other free agents.

Barnes is and always will be an underachiever. He'll never be a star.

Re: Suns News: The Offseason (2016)
Been envisioning this since we drafted him, but two years after the fact, it is still an unknown. I am encouraged since Warren started making threes last season, although the 3pt shot was more or less a given to me; the real challenge will be defense and defensive rebounding. Marion was a freak and often would grab the miss or block a shot and still finish at the other end, but Warren is not that player. Then again, Warren is twice the scorer Marion was, skills wise (and with all due respect to the monster).INFORMER wrote:I think Warren is more of a small ball 4 than Barnes is.In2ition wrote:I definitely think the Suns see Barnes as a 4 in the offense. Even those highlights don't look like star plays to me. They look like a role player who is open because the defense is focused on someone else.

Re: Suns News: The Offseason (2016)
This guy is going to be such a freaking bust if he gets maxed out and becomes "the man." This is not a Harden situation here. Barnes just doesn't have "it." He will never lead a good team. Woe to the franchise that opens their pocketbooks to this underachieving middling forward.
Re: Suns News: The Offseason (2016)
On paper, it makes a ton of sense for us to pursue Barnes. He's just 24, still has a ton of potential to improve over the next 4 years, has played on two of the best teams ever with 2 Finals appearances, already has 1 ring with probably 1 more on the way. Falls right in line with the "We're young but not rebuilding; we're competing while we develop talent" lines we hear. He's a prototype forward for today's game given his size and skillset and can step in and contribute (while improving) and hopefully leading guys like Bledsoe and Knight, who don't have a lot of winning under their belts.
Here's the reality. He's probably the 7th option on a stacked team and has been a glue guy in the best sense. He's perfect in his role there and could probably duplicate it on some other successful teams needing a player like him. He does a little bit of everything and has shown flashes for sure but hasn't shown to be a "takeover" guy, nor has he been asked to be. I think giving him max money, for us, would be a mistake. It's one of those instances where he may be worth more to the Ws than a team like ours. First, I'm philosophically against giving max money out just to spend it. Barnes isn't a max player. He's a role player, 3rd option at best. He'd be a great fit for our team because he doesn't have to score to be effective, but not at max money. If he plays the 4 here, it probably means TJ or Booker are at the 3. If he's at the 3, Len is starting or we've added a starting PF in some form. Either way, not ideal IMO. You can’t just duplicate what the Ws have by trying to put similar players together on a roster. Again, I think McD looks at everything “on paper” and assumes it will just work. Even putting TJ and Barnes at the 3/4 spots and having them switch off and play like Barnes and Draymond won’t work because it’s not the same. TJ isn’t Draymond, Bledsoe isn’t Curry, Knight isn’t Thompson, etc. If we moved Knight, started Booker at the 2 and picked up a guy (hypothetical) Millsap, maybe we’d have something there. But that’s not the reality of our situation. I used to say similar things about Jared Dudley and Boris – they can make good teams better but won’t make bad teams good. Barnes is in that category, and paying him a max contract will haunt the team and its fan base.

I just read a piece by Raptors Raptures that suggested the Suns take a trade of 9, 27, and next years 2nd rounder for #4.
