Suns News: The Offseason (2016)
Re: Suns News: The Offseason (2016)
He seems like the exact opposite of Hornacek. Horny would have given us a lot of "we'll see how it plays out" until 5 games into the season then make a switch that pisses everyone off. I think this is the best way it could have been handled, so kudos to Watson for that.

From a few of the articles and quotes, he seems lukewarm but willing to give it a shot because he obviously has no choice. And again, as long as we're winning he'll be cool. But he's not exactly embracing the move.

“I respect Earl. Earl did an excellent job of letting me know ahead of time,” said Knight. “He’s (a) straightforward, honest guy and I love him for that. That’s the reason I want to play for Earl, ’cause a lot of coaches wouldn’t handle it that way. I appreciate the way Earl handled it and I respect him a lot for that.”
I think you are not alone in that thinking, and above all, the respect that earns you to be clear with people. This quote seems to me, like a clear comparison with last season's handling of the team's issues.

Transparency is so helpful, especially when it causes difficult conversations.

I love Hornacek but the players' lack of understanding of their roles was telling while this is refreshing.
Synchronicity and all that jazz, man.

Just confirmed I'm going to the home opener. Suns game in Phoenix is a bucket-list item for me. Pretty pumped (despite what's likely going to be a crap game).

Yep, seems like an indirect shot at Horny. Respect to Earl. May not turn out to be a good basketball coach, but he's got all the personal attributes you'd like in one.Aztec Sunsfan wrote:From the article:carey wrote:He seems like the exact opposite of Hornacek. Hopefully, I will cross it off my list next year.
Re: Suns News: The Offseason (2016)
Right. That is how I feel, too. I really hope he shows the basketball chops, but so far we have seen he has everything else. And I don't mean to gloss over that. To me it is more important, but they are close. So if he is poor on the BB side, but outstanding on the people management side, he will still fail. This year will be telling.specialsauce wrote:Yep, seems like an indirect shot at Horny. Respect to Earl. I'll do my best, but going with 14 people for work. It may have to be a post-game report.Marty [Mori Chu] wrote:Awesome! “We have a high-five stat,” Head Coach Earl Watson said following the 91-86 victory. “I’m being honest with you. This is true. So we want to keep track of how many high-fives we get per game to each other.”
Re: Suns News: The Offseason (2016)
Silly idea. A high-five isn't supposed to be something you do to accumulate stats.ShelC wrote:http://www.nba.com/suns/blog/suns-track ... amaraderie“We have a high-five stat,” Head Coach Earl Watson said following the 91-86 victory. “I’m being honest with you. “Are you crazy?! You think I’m going to go for seven years and try to get there? You enjoy the 2030 draft picks that we have holding? I want to try to see the game today.” — Ish 3/13/25

What about celebratory ass slaps? Those are just as important as high-fives, if not more.
Re: Suns News: The Offseason (2016)

BSotS gave a bit of detail on that after the Spurs game. lolol The only people more desperate for something to say about the Suns than us are the reporters.

Re: Suns News: The Offseason (2016)
Personally, I think it's a little childish. And the family stuff Watson is preaching lends itself better to a college atmosphere. NBA teams aren't families, the coach isn't the daddy. It's a business and the best teams approach it that way. Their players come to work because it's their job. The family stuff goes out the window when guys start getting traded...just ask the Bucks when JKidd was preaching the family stuff and they, ironically, traded Brandon Knight.
Re: Suns News: The Offseason (2016)
That high-five stat is stupid. I really like seeing them encourage and help each other, but making it into a stat like that is dumb. If I were Brandon Knight I'd be thinking, "I'm coming off the bench and not getting minutes, but I'm supposed to buy in to this high five stuff?"
