Lonzo just got traded so he was absolutely available.
Yeah, all you needed was Anthony Davis to make it happen.
Right. It's nuts how some people think it's so easy to make deals.
WHY AREN'T THE SUNS TRYING TO SIGN KAWHI LEONARD?!?!!11

Lonzo shoots worse than Rubio, substantially so from the free throw line (Shaq level bad). And yet, the people that would be jumping for joy if we got him are the same fools bashing the team for getting Rubio. What the fuck. We improved and we didn't pay that garbage Rozier money. But complain. We're great at it. Nevermind that this makes Booker's job easier and should give Ayton way more opportunities to succeed.

I'm actually optimistic about the moves we've made and the improvement we should expect next season. Prized coach, rookies that should contribute right away, improved PG situation and a few more moves to come. What is everyone else here expecting? AD, Kawhi, Kyrie...? I'm baffled how people here can be so up in arms and seemingly destroyed by the moves we've made.

They aren't going to fix this overnight, let's just hope this offseason is getting it headed in the right direction. I'd be happy with 30 wins.

My only complaint is we overpaid. Would Rubio have turned down a 3 year deal starting at 13.2 or whatever our max space was?

Absolutely. No more trash offense and the inability to make a bucket. Booker has been asked to do all this playmaking and the offense and talent has been horrendous. Just ugly basketball. Now we’ve got at least 3 starters who can pass the ball between Rubio, Saric, and Book. It’s not an “overnight fix” but at least they’ll be playing to win a game instead of just trying to not be blown out.
And look! There’s actually a bench! TJ, Baynes, Bridges, and the rooks. Hopefully Ayton is working on his PNR dive and post moves all summer.
And what if he turns it down? Who is lining up for his services?
You can get Ish Smith and probably a quarter of the price who essentially does the same thing.
No. He doesn't. You're just being dumb now Informer. Ish Smith is not Rubio. Stop being foolish to make a point.
And how can you begin to say nobody else is lining up for his services? As if he's suddenly a bad basketball player. You have to strike early with a player you can realistically obtain. You don't jerk around with D'Lo, for example, if it's already known his intentions to sign with another team. Then Rubio signs somewhere else and you're actually left with Ish Smith. Imagine the outrage if we got him. And you're suggesting it's basically the same player.

You're right; Ish Smith isn't Rubio. Ish Smith has the second highest assist-to-turnover ratio over the last three NBA seasons. Rubio, well, does not.

You'd have to think that they tried to get him on a cap friendly of a contract as possible. I mean, that's why it's a negotiation, right?
Ultimately, when you're a laughing stock of the league, you have to overpay or out smart everyone.
I’m not sure who else was going to sign him. 3/51 was probably the price to sign immediately, but I think we could have waited him out and got him for like 3/42

Waiting out players indicates a disinterest. There's so much more that goes into all of this behind the scenes. If it was as easy as sitting back, watching FA's get snatched up and then seeing if a player is willing to wait out your lower offer, especially being a bottom 3 team year in and year out. It's laughable how many fans play armchair GM and think it's as easy as thinking things into existence.
I think the question is how much of a difference is there between Ricky Rubio and Ish Smith? $13 million a year difference?
It's $11 million a year difference. Ish is on a 3 year, 18 million dollar contract. 6 per season for Ish vs. 17 per for Rubio.
Ish Smith is a free agent; he currently is not on any contract.
Even better. Where are you getting your numbers then? He was on a bargain 3 year contract. You know he's going to get paid by somebody so how the heck are you coming up with 13 million per season if it was 11 per season during the Ish Smith bargain years?
