So if a team isn't going to pay the market price for a star, even if it's at the cost of a superstar, they're just going to circle the drain until the lottery balls come up in their favor.

It's a tough pill to swallow but it is what it is. Can't give someone who is not a top 10 player in the league 35% of your salary cap.

I would not offer a supermax to a player I don't think can be the best player on my championship team. I would use that cap space more judiciously to build the team and develop talent. This is due to the second apron.

Chances of landing a Booker in the draft again are slim, you build around what you have, he's drawn players to the Suns on multiple occasions. They had countless lottery picks blow up in their face, multiple top 5 picks. You'd rather go the Bender Chriss route than the build around a guy who has led the team to the finals because you think it's too much money? Welp, if Booker was a FA the league would be lining up to throw money at him. His down year was 26/4/7. I was very pro trade Booker but now I've come around on what we were before he got here, that shit sucked.

A story like this probably should’ve prompted a simple, “Good for him!” in response before everyone quickly moved on. Instead, it became the latest round of people who have been wrong about Booker since 2015 dumping on him and the Suns with bad-faith arguments.
Make no mistake about it: Phoenix is in a tough spot. Their high hopes for the Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal era ended this summer, with a demoralizing trade and a likely waive-and-stretch, respectively. Booker will turn 29 before the upcoming season, and while the Suns fully committed to their vision of getting younger, more athletic and more defensive-minded, they’ll be taking a step backward this year in order to start moving forward again.
But it seems all of this overshadowed what should’ve been a happy, straightforward, very predictable development, and the resulting talking points were grating.

No idea how this season will be taking a step backwards compared to the fuckery that was last season. I can't wait!
By the time the contract ends he’ll be almost 34 years old. He may not even have a hamstring left by then. Damian Lillard just got bought out at 34.
I mean...KD has "one good Achilles" and is still doing great things at 36/37. Booker has a few hamstring strains, but still played more than 65 games. It's one thing to dislike the guy, or to believe he isn't "the one". I totally respect that as your opinion, but let's not pretend that he is this fragile Bradley Beal type "always injured" guy. (hopefully i didnt jinx anything)

I am definitely on the positive side about this Booker contract and extension. He's a superstar, and we're basically asking him to stay here through a long rebuild where we trade / cut the two other stars we brought in to pair with him. You can't low-ball a guy when you are asking him to do that.
You can say you'd rather pay him less, but he wouldn't accept that. And lots of teams would line up to pay him this contract, so this is his market value, like it or not.
You might even say you'd rather just lose him than pay him this much. Fine, but, we'd almost certainly use that cap space to sign a player(s) worse than Booker. Book is an excellent player and we might as well lock him down and keep him.
Even if the current team doesn't work out, IMO the extension will actually make Booker more tradeable. Teams will pay more for him if they know they'll get him under contract for several years to come. So I don't think we will be shackled to this contract or that it'll turn into the Beal situation.
As for it taking up too much of our cap: How long does the current CBA last? We may not even have the 2nd apron as we know it by the time Book's big new extension comes up. By then, we'll have Beal's buyout off our books, almost every player currently on big contracts on our roster will be gone, and we'll be able to figure it out.
Summary: Good contract, love Booker, hope he retires a Sun. This is how you treat a home-grown superstar. Right decision. Don't like it? Cry more.
