There was nothing wrong with either of his two positionings. Either ballhandler could easily have passed it to him. They didn't even have to bounce it to him, could also lob it up high where only he can get it. Ignoring him didn't work out well for them, did it?
That's exactly what they should want him to do--back down the defender deeper into the paint to get better position. He was actively moving away from Brogdon and putting himself in a more difficult position to receive the pass. There's no advantage to be had if his teammates can't reliably get him the ball.
