We can't waive and stretch his whole salary. Only 15% of their cap space can be taken up by "dead money" and that would put them over.
They can waive him and have his full salary count against the cap, but that'd be really productive.

Though I still don’t understand the 15% rule…people keep bringing it up and saying Beal needs to give up 30 million, but by my calculations he’d only need to give up 14 million.

For me when it comes to Beal, I would just rather eat his whole $50m for 2 years and then get it completely off the books, rather than have $20m cap hit on the books for 5 more years. Let's shorten the window where he's able to hurt us, then we can have a huge chunk of cap space back. We're not going to be any good for the next 2 years anyway. But 4-5 years from now? I want all that cap space, I don't want $20m of Beal STILL bothering us in 2030.

This. Maybe I'm crazy but I expect Ott to put Beal into a better space to succeed instead of telling him to be Jrue Holiday and then moving on like dip shit did. I still think Beal can be a very good piece when he's healthy, we'll need his shooting and ability to get pressure on the rim.

Beal is still good…he was an awful fit and we tried to change him into what we wanted him to be too much and he resisted. He was actually still the one who adapted his game more than the other 2 stars…that plus benching him and trying to trade him all season understandably didn’t sit right with him. The whole team quit mid season anyways, so I will give him another chance. I don’t expect it to work or anything, but I think he’ll play better next year and with less time on the deal, he might actually become tradable at some point.
That's for the FO cap gurus and nepo babies Bartelstein and Tellem to figure out. I don't think you're giving Ott or the new team a fair chance with Beal in the gym. Can't talk about hustle, grit, defense and then have Beal jogging around making $50mil knowing no one wants him there.
Yea, it's hard too... Especially when getting rid of him is going to cost you more than just riding it out. Kinda why I always thought our best solution was to blow it up, eat shit for 2 years with him and draft/sign accordingly. We could easily be back in competition within 3-4 years but doing this middle of the ground rebuild isn't going to get you a championship but just prolong the rebuild process. They're trying to have their cake and eat it too. We need to recalibrate, especially if we're talking about building a long-term culture that "aligns" with ownership... unfortunately this would all come at the expense of Book, which we all know isn't going to happen.

But it costs more to get rid of him than it does to keep him. Id love to magically get off that albatross too, his acquisition destroyed this team from a flexibility standpoint. I also think there's a reason that all the HC candidates were asked what you'd do with Beal, the FO knows we're stuck with him.

Look at it from the reverse - If you're another team in the NBA - why would you take on Beal's no-trade clause when you take into account his salary and availablity issues? Nobody wants to give up any assets for that at this point. Maybe in a year when he's an expiring contract, but not now.
And it's not Beal's fault that he was overpaid and also given a no-trade clause. Why would he ever turn that deal down? The Suns' management are the ones to blame for the situation. They traded their on the court leader for an inferior player at a higher salary with a no-trade clause all because Chris Paul was starting to show his age. And now, I think most of us would have preferred a diminished Paul over the last two years for $41 million over Beal for $97 million.

I think I mostly agree with this. I would rather just keep Beal here than pay him his full salary to go away or stretch him. He wasn't a good fit, but he is still a talented player, and if we are unable to trade him and his salary is going to hurt our cap anyway, might as well keep him here. Ott might be able to find a better way to use him. Or maybe he'll do better without KD on the roster. Or maybe he'll have an unexpectedly good year. Or, gasp, maybe Book will get injured and miss half the season and we'll need a starting SG to slot in. Beal could actually prove to be pretty useful for us in some scenarios. Do I think that is the most likely outcome? Meh, not really; probably he'll be more of the same. But he isn't worthless, and we might as well get 18-20 ppg out of him if we're going to eat $50m on him. No need to lock in the loss with no upside.
I don't think Beal is some kind of locker room cancer where we have to pay to get him away from our team. If anything he was pretty accommodating about trying to fit into a different role and accepting coming off the bench. And he took a large amount of blame and vitriol for our bad season when really it was a lot of people's fault. I could actually see him working better next year with no KD, a new coach, and lower expectations.
I’ve been the biggest Booker fan and love the guy. This isn’t hate toward him but about how the hell to fix this team….
In 99.99999% you don’t trade book…. But when your new owner comes in and completely torpedoes your roster and future, you have no choice but to utilize that one piece to rebuild draft capital you lost. Draft picks aren’t just some lame asset, they’re a key piece in keeping things in fiscal guidelines. Thinking we will magically build a team by free agents is leaving you with the statistical outliers and fringe players who aren’t going to get us over the hump in anyway.
Once again Matt coming in and telling everyone we’re not trading Booker just proves again he’s the GM ruining this team.
I was hopeful we were going to recoup draft capital with KD trade but that’s looking less and less likely.

What I keep coming around to with Booker is, maybe if we had a really savvy GM and front office that could rebuild our team around draft picks, then okay, trade Book to Houston for our own draft picks back and start the process. But this FO is a bunch of incompetent boobs. If they trade away Booker they'll almost certainly botch the rebuild. Why do I want to watch that? I'm content to keep Book here a bit longer and enjoy him while I still can, before this ownership ruins him too.

Why? If the goal is a championship, keeping him does nothing towards getting there. I don’t get valuing one guy over the whole franchise. I don’t disagree they’ll botch the rebuild because nothing they’ve done so far has assured us any confidence.
I guess if you’re content with watching Booker play and continue going nowhere then fine but I’d love to see a parade one day.
