I heard they want Fred Hoiberg as their new coach. He'd probably be good, but I wonder whether he'll be good soon enough to keep Love there. (I hope not.)

I actually think he'll be a good coach. I was sad to see him go at the end of his GM run here after a rocky start.

Adelman's heart wasn't in it this year. His wife is ill and he's getting old. He was a pretty good coach in his day but it's a good time for him to move on.

Utah has elected not to offer Corbin a new contract so they will be needing a new coach as well.

So far teams that need coaches: Minnesota, New York, Utah.

No disrespect to POP, But I thought that was Horencek's award. I'm pretty surprised.

Agreed. It's hard to argue against Pops winning it though. The injuries he was able to overcome, the winning streak, having the best record...

Following the overall media trend over the last month, there was a definite swing toward Popovich as it became clear that (a) the Spurs will somehow get the #1 overall NBA record despite not playing a single player 30+ minutes a game, and (b) the Suns are likely to slip out of the playoff race. I actually support it. Horny did a FANTASTIC job, but it's easier to make an expected-to-be-bad team decent than it is to make an expected-to-be-decent team into the best team in the NBA.

Pops was the winner after the Suns missed the playoffs. I have no complains. Horny did a hell of a job but milestones as the postseason really do matter in this league. Goran should be second or third all NBA team but I could see him out under the same principle.

I'm really impressed Pop got coach of the year after taking a team that almost won the championship last year and winning a lot of games with them. Such a great job.

Here's how I look at it. That loss they had in the Finals was crushing. Demoralizing. It would have been easy to just sag their shoulders, pout about it, and come out this year with a lackluster follow-up season. A lot of people predicted that, actually. Or any number of other bad outcomes. Pop could have overplayed key guys like Duncan, Ginobili, or Parker and gotten them hurt in an attempt to prove themselves or chase the #1 seed. But instead, not only did he play every player, EVERY player, under 30 minutes a game, which I believe has never happened since 1927 or something, but he also STILL got the #1 seed. That blows my mind. How does this team get the #1 seed in the entire NBA? When there's a hungry OKC team lurking, an up-and-coming Pacers team on the scene, and the defending champion Heat? How do the Spurs get the NBA's best record? That is amazing. They didn't even remotely miss a beat.

Plus I do think there is a bit of a "career accomplishment" feeling here, that Pop deserves more of these awards for having been an awesome coach for the past 15+ straight years.

Just watch a couple of Spurs games. Every single player on that team is achieving 100.0% of his potential. They play in concert; they move in unison like they're doing synchronized swimming. Scrubs like Danny Green, Tiago Splitter, and Patty Mills are having huge impact. The team's defense is sweltering. And the old guys, the Big 3, are fresh and rested. Popovich is responsible for all of this.

He far and away deserves Coach of the Year.
