Earl Watson: Suns' evaluation to last as long as management says = http://www.azcentral.com/story/sports/n ... /98781516/
Suns coach Earl Watson was asked when or if he planned to return center Tyson Chandler and guard Brandon Knight to the rotation. Both players haven't played since the All-Star break, a stretch of six contests, including Sunday.

"I'm not changing it unless management changes it,'' Watson said. "I have a boss and my boss has a boss, so whatever comes from up top is what's going to happen. And right now, that's not even part of our equation."

Yeah, it was 109-106. I was copy & pasting and I left the score from the Sacramento game in there somehow.
Go Suns!

Does that really bother anyone else? I find it ridiculous that Sarver tells Ryan to tell Watson who to play, and both Watson and Ryan are good with that.

Sure, if you take it literally. You really think it was Sarver's idea to play the young guys? I think it's more likely that they all work together on these decisions. Mostly if not all McDonough and Watson. Supposedly Sarver is hands off these days.

Is there some reason we wouldn't take that literally? Who is the figurative boss's boss here?

Keep reading:
Watson's comments made it sound as if management solely made the post-All-Star break decision. Pressed on the issue, however, he said that wasn't the case.

"I didn't say that,'' he said. "I said if things change, it will be from management."
Sounds to me like he's saying he has made his decision, and the only way it will change is if it's overridden from above.

Does this kind of remind you of '03-'04 season, where they could have tanked the rest of the season, but they started winning with Marion, STAT and JJ?

There were a lot of articles and talk on the subject last offseason, I believe it was.

It sounded like it's McD's decision. Watson was just showing the authority works.

I'm fine with it. We all know Watson would have kept playing Knight, Tucker and Chandler and maybe even Price more than he would have the young kids. So if some persuasion from McD helped get the lineup we see now, that's cool.

It's tough when the GM gets a bunch of players and then the coach doesn't play the guys the way the GM wanted them to be played. We saw a bit of this with D'Antoni and Kerr toward the end of SSOL; Kerr had brought in some players who played tougher defense, but Mike D didn't want to focus on D in practice or play guys whose primary contributions were on the defensive end. So Mike D quit.

Yeah that's the one good thing about Watson, I think he'll listen to orders from McDonough because he knows once the Suns fire him, he would likely never get another HC opportunity again.

I also think that part of this goes back to Watson's relationship with the players. Its easier to tell Chandler and Knight they are benched because management wants to see what the young guys are capable of. It allows Watson to bench the vets without feeling like he has somehow turned on them or lost faith in them.

I think for Watson, it always comes back to managing his relationships with the players in the locker room.

I've heard Kerr say that the one thing he regrets from Phoenix is not establishing a good relationship with Mike D. He thought he would just get players and tell Mike how to play them, and GM is the boss, so Mike would do what he expected. He realizes now that he's a coach that the GM and coach have to have the same vision for the team and work as partners not boss/employee.

Reddit thread on a speech Sarver gave to season ticket holders.
Every year Sarver gives a speech to season ticket holders sharing his thoughts on the team. I've been about as vocal as anyone on this sub in saying his attitude and personality have held the team back but I was impressed with his candor last night and I thought you guys would like to hear some of his thoughts. I was pretty surprised just how similar his views were to the majority of this sub.
-Started with Explanation of the CBA and how hard it will be for vets to move around and those restrictions to bird rights and similar are only going to be tougher after the Durant move. As one of the guys leading this charge in CBA negotiations, he would know.
-"it takes 3 all stars to contend" the goal is to get 3 all-stars, one team has 3 another has 4 we can't contend right now.
-no veteran free agents this summer.
-2020, Repeated several times that the timeline is to have the 3 stars and contend by 2020.
Views on current roster
-Bledsoe is close to being an all-star
-Booker will be an all star
-Chriss and bender could be all stars
-Ullis and Jones Jr are on really good deals for their talent
Recent moves
-PJ was told he was going to a playoff team a few days before to clear minutes, wanted to stay, did not ask to be traded.
-Tyson was given the option of going to a contender, or sitting out the rest of the year, asked to stay and sit. The Bulls did this to Brad Miller and Charles Oakley his rookie year for him and Curry so he thought it was a good idea.
Draft
-the Scouting department thinks this is the best draft since '03 (Lebron, wade, melo)
-Pick will be top 7. pretty conservative guess, right now it is slated as #3.
-didn't mention any prospect by name or position.
Go Suns!
