Re: Steve Kerr is the new Warriors coach
I get it from Kerr's point of view. For diferente reasons, both NY and GS are prone to become hot seats as soon as next season, so better be near home with a better roster to work with.
But Golden State should have pursued Stan Van Gundy, as a much more stablished voice to follow after Jackson's dissmisal. I don't get it, unless the Warriors FO were told that they were losing Van Gundy to Detroit, and run to Steve Kerr as a second choice.

And I wouldn't have think of Kerr as an oportunistic guy, leaving NY in the altar and spurning none the less than one of his so-called mentors. Out of nowhere, he was appointed as the first hiring on Phil Jackson's debut as GM, and Kerr milked that interest to set up a bidding war for the services of a first time coach with no experience on the bench, then going to his best suitor. Karma is a bitch, so he better bring it on with his coaching to Golden State.

I think the extra guaranteed year had a lot to do with it. Also his family is still in California and that's important. SD > SF is not that far of a trip. I was hoping D'Antoni would wind up there, and I'm really surprised the Warriors opted for a 2nd coach with no coaching experience from the broadcast booth.

Wowwwwwwww, I just saw this and came to the site to post/talk about it. Huge news, huge steal for GSW. Kerr is a great catch for them as coach. It actually makes a lot of sense because I think the Knicks can find somebody else, maybe Mark Jackson, to be their new head coach.
As for Kerr, the Knicks are just a dysfunctional mess. Why should he want to go coach that horrible roster? He'd go sub-.500 and probably be on the hot seat right away. Also, no offense, but Phil Jackson inspires zero confidence from me as president/GM. Him as a rookie GM plus Kerr as a rookie coach, plus a horrible roster, plus an unhappy Melo, plus a horrible owner? NO THANK YOU. That would have just been a shit show from top to bottom. Kerr is extremely wise to turn down that gig.
Instead, he goes in to Golden State to a team that has already been successful. He just has to maintain, to keep things going. I have to believe that he'll be a better head coach than Mark Jackson was because he'll, you know, run plays and stuff. And not fight with / fire all of his assistants.
Great hire for GSW, and happy for my boy Steve Kerr.

Re: Steve Kerr is the new Warriors coach
Yeah, I am actually not sure whether Kerr is even a good fit for them. I mean they just had a very player-friendly coach in Mark Jackson who had bonded very strongly with the players. He bonded with them not only as a coach and mentor but also as a cultural figure, a religious figure, etc. They just had a lot more in common with Jackson. I could see them bringing in somebody who's a better strategist like SVG, but a brand new coach like Kerr, I don't know if he'll actually be great for this situation.
I heard a rumor that they were considering Lionel Hollins. Weird thing is, I could totally see him working well for them. Not as player-friendly but a good strategist and gets a lot out of the players. As others have said, I could have pictured D'Antoni doing really well, too. Mike D's got his shortcomings, for certain, but he seems like a coach who would understand how to make Curry and Klay score oodles of points and run the enemy off the floor.

Jalen Rose is tweeting that Steve Kerr was inappropriately kissing up to GSW during the season/playoffs to try to work toward getting hired there. Sounds like a reach to me.

He forgot his gold chain with a plaque that says 'moron' for the Shaq trade.

Lots of good articles about the Knicks situation and Kerr's decision today. Here's another one I liked:

Re: Steve Kerr is the new Warriors coach
Do we remotely know what kind of basketball will he have them playing?
Re: Steve Kerr is the new Warriors coach
He'll have them run around and shoot 3s because thats pretty much what everyone in the NBA does now.

Re: Steve Kerr is the new Warriors coach
Yeah, yet Mike D gets all the heat in the world in part for doing exactly that.
Re: Steve Kerr is the new Warriors coach
Problem w/MikeD is that he'd rather let the other team score so he can have his guys shoot again. Zero defensive accountability. His offense was never the problem, its the lack of defense and giant ego.
Love, Hurts.

I would have loved to see that offense in hyper-drive.Mori Chu wrote: As others have said, I could have pictured D'Antoni doing really well, too.
