50+ Killed in Vegas
http://www.cnn.com/2017/10/02/us/las-ve ... index.html
I'm without words. I started following this last night before I went to sleep. I prayed I'd wake up to better news. My heart breaks. Completely senseless. I've been to Vegas so many times. My sister was supposed to go this upcoming weekend where they got married for their anniversary. I have friends that live near the strip. Friends that returned Saturday. Why would someone do this...

What is smallball? I play basketball. I'm not a regular big man. I can switch from the center to the guards. The game is evolving. I'd be dominAyton if the WNBA would let me in. - Ayton
Re: 50+ Killed in Vegas
What a sad and tragic story.
Have they found out yet what the killer was up to, or why they were doing this?

Lone wolf, older white guy who killed himself after the shooting. Just awful. But as we've seen in the past, nothing will change with regards to gun laws.
Re: 50+ Killed in Vegas
When will it end? It has only gotten worse. I hope the NRA and the gun lobbys are happy.

Well, stock prices on gun manufacturers are going up, so they probably are.Superbone wrote:When will it end? It has only gotten worse. I hope the NRA and the gun lobbys are happy.

Not attacking you, Shel, but "lone wolf" is only used when white guys do this. He is clearly a terrorist.ShelC wrote:Lone wolf, older white guy who killed himself after the shooting. Just awful. But as we've seen in the past, nothing will change with regards to gun laws.
Re: 50+ Killed in Vegas
The guy was an older white guy. He had lots of money and no prior contact with law enforcement. Not even a speeding ticket. What makes a retired accountant with lots of money decide to become a mass killer? Bizzare. I listened to the audio clips. His gun was obviously a fully automatic one judging by the rate of fire.
He could have killed 100,000+ and it wouldn't make any difference to the 2nd Amendment people. They will just say everybody in the concert should have came with sniper rifles.
http://www.cnn.com/2017/10/02/us/las-ve ... index.html
(CNN)Stephen Paddock, the man police say killed at least 58 people on the Las Vegas Strip, was a retired accountant who enjoyed playing $100-a-hand poker, his brother says.
Eric Paddock of Orlando, Florida, also told CNN their father was a bank robber.
Authorities say Stephen Paddock, 64, lived within easy driving distance of Las Vegas, had a pilot's license and had legally purchased some guns.
Stephen Paddock had been living in Mesquite, 80 miles northeast of Las Vegas. The town of 18,000 people is a retiree community with several casinos and golf courses.
Authorities searched his home Monday and found weapons and ammunition, but Mesquite police spokesman Quinn Averett did not give details.
"What's unique for us is the gunman, the shooter, and the person with him, we in the Mesquite Police Department have not had any contact with these people in the past. We haven't had any traffic stops, any law enforcement contact, no arrests or nothing," Averett said.

This event has already gone right straight to partisan politics.
Democrats like Hillary Clinton calling for more gun laws while FOX News comes out with

A top lawyer for CBS said she is “not even sympathetic” to victims of the Las Vegas shooting because “country music fans often are Republican,” when discussing the tragic mass shooting that occurred in Las Vegas late Sunday night."
“If they wouldn’t do anything when children were murdered I have no hope that Repugs [sic] will ever do the right thing,” Geftman-Gold wrote in a now-deleted message that was first reported and captured by The Daily Caller.
Geftman-Gold continued: “I’m actually not even sympathetic bc [sic] country music fans often are Republican gun toters [sic].”

This Geftman-Gold character just signed a death warrant for her career. Idiot. But yeah, of course she will be used as an example of how all left leaning people think and Fox news will go crazy with it.
And shouldn't all people, regardless of affiliations, be clamoring for better gun laws?

Re: 50+ Killed in Vegas
Not to get into semantics but anything like this can be considered a "terrorist" incident. The motive is what defines the terrorism. I don't know that any motive has been established but he wasn't linked to ISIS (as the news had reported they claimed responsibility) or some left or right wing political/military organization as of yet. If this guy were mentally ill and just snapped over something, it's terrorism but not how we've come to define it when dealing with religion or politics. I think there is a differentiation between the two.

I wonder if her twitter bio said she was a CBS lawyer. Otherwise, I don't get the connection.Superbone wrote:This Geftman-Gold character just signed a death warrant for her career. Idiot. Re: 50+ Killed in Vegas
I agree that motive is the determinant factor. And I think of terrorism in the literal definition of it, not only tied to ISIS or Islam (or Christianity, for that matter). It is something that is intended to terrorize (while usually trying to convey intimidation towards others). We may find out that this guy was tripping on something bad and just snapped, but this kind of action takes a lot of planning. I don't think you can plan (hording ammo, automatic weapons, getting the hotel room over looking a concert) like this and call it all a snap. When you take numerous steps to plan to kill as many people as possible, I don't know how to not call it terrorism.ShelC wrote:Not to get into semantics but anything like this can be considered a "terrorist" incident. Re: 50+ Killed in Vegas
I grew up in Vegas and love the city. And so many of my family and friends live there. Just such a crazy thing. Will this be the thing that finally gets some sort of gun control laws passed? I doubt it, but I hope so.
Re: 50+ Killed in Vegas
I thought the American Carnage was supposed to stop in January.

Re: 50+ Killed in Vegas
This is horrible. I don't know all the facts here, but making this political immediately, seems wrong to me. I think we need to get the facts straight first and figure out motive of this clearly disturbed person.
Did he use multiple automatic weapons? I heard that, but can not confirm.
Also, I heard that he used multiple vantage points from his suite and multiple guns. Sounds like this was pretty well planned out.

Re: 50+ Killed in Vegas
It sounds like he carefully planned it which kind of rules out tripping on something. I watched a video of his brother saying they had no clue his brother was up to anything like this. The guy just bought a walker for his mom a week ago who was having trouble walking. His brother said he owned a couple of hand guns in a safe and maybe one long rifle. No automatic anything. He claimed his brother has never even hit anybody. No incidents with the law, not even a speeding ticket. No mental illness. No Facebook posts or a letter saying goodbye or anything?
So bizzare. An older white guy. Why attack concert goers? Country music. A pissed off Liberal? It makes no sense. Where's the motive?
ISIS claiming responsibility? And old white guy who isn't a Muslim who didn't need money. Doesn't sound very ISIS to me.
My wife's family lives in Vegas. A nephew was going to go to the concert but decided not to at the last minute.
I hope we eventually find out why this guy snapped.

On a side conspiracy note. Did anybody see the movie Shooter with Mark Wahlberg?

I saw it. I wouldn't rule out anything at this point, but it is very unlikely.Nodack wrote:On a side conspiracy note. Did anybody see the movie Shooter with Mark Wahlberg?

The facts at this point don't add up very well with the outcome. I'm sure there are a lot of people (law, media, curious people) digging into thos guys past as we speak and hopefully we get a clearer picture soon.
