Meanwhile . . .

Post by Dan H »

http://spectator.org/articles/62236/eti ... nihilation

It is amazing — indeed, staggering — that so few Americans are talking about what it would mean for the world’s biggest sponsor of international terrorism, Iran, to have nuclear bombs, and to be developing intercontinental missiles that can deliver them far beyond the Middle East.

Back during the years of the nuclear stand-off between the Soviet Union and the United States, contemplating what a nuclear war would be like was called “thinking the unthinkable.” But surely the Nazi Holocaust during World War II should tell us that what is beyond the imagination of decent people is by no means impossible for people who, as Churchill warned of Hitler before the war, had “currents of hatred so intense as to sear the souls of those who swim upon them.”

Have we not already seen that kind of hatred in the Middle East? Have we not seen it in suicide bombings there and in suicide attacks against America by people willing to sacrifice their own lives by flying planes into massive buildings, to vent their unbridled hatred?

The Soviet Union was never suicidal, so the fact that we could annihilate their cities if they attacked ours was a sufficient deterrent to a nuclear attack from them. But will that deter fanatics with an apocalyptic vision? Should we bet the lives of millions of Americans on our ability to deter nuclear war with Iran?

Meanwhile... Ellen tricks the world! She has lied for years! The After Birth Abortion has Arrived! Shady Car Salesmen Tricks! A Simple Way to Erase Years From Your Face!

Why aren't you more skeptical of this magazine and less skeptical of all the other industrialized nations on earth other than Israel, who support a deal with Iran? The selection bias is mighty strong with this one. "Conservative journalism" tends to be conspiracy-mongering and fear-peddling. Would it really make you feel safer if we just bombed the heck out of that country? And while the government is a theocracy, the people are rather more secular, as many sources have indicated. They want to deal with America in large part as a response to increasing popular pressure to modernize.

Fwiw, a deal with Iran enjoys huge support among Americans. How can the Republican party hope to win a national election when their positions are consistently contrary to the views of the majority of the country? Can't gerrymander the country, nor can it pass voter ID laws everywhere...

Hmm, Pew's results are bit different than WP's. Be interesting to see the internals.

I don't think we should be involved in all. If I had my druthers we'd pull out of every overseas base we had.

Funny, in this sense, that puts me to the right of you, you big dove!

Pretty strange that a guy who knows how to do legitimate research can't manage to shed the encumbrance of conservative media (though your articles don't actually appear to offer evidence contrary to my statement, so...?). At least refer to the pseudo-intellectuals on that side - though I must say, even they look increasingly like apologists for disinformation-based politics.

Also, if we just left Iran alone (and continuing sanctions), wouldn't that *actually* be giving them the bomb?!?!?

Yeah, France and the Sunni countries are totes onboard with Iran getting nukes, OE32.

And it's not so much that I'm a dove, it's that the ME in particular is a cesspool that I don't feel is worth our time, troops, or treasure.

OOOOooooooh, the Suuuuuunni countries. Did you not see the word "developed, industrialized" in my post? Maybe I should have been narrower and included the word "democracies."

But don't you get how your passivity and your wanting to stop Iran from getting the bomb are in obvious, tremendous discord? How do those two thoughts live in the same head?

Totally disregarding France still, I guess.

My point is that us not negotiating would be far better than the concessions we've given up. Hell, even our allies are concerned about the concessions we've given! Iran at the very least should comply with IAEA before we even begin to consider negotiations, which they are not.

Which questions are those?

France is probably the most racist country towards people from the middle east in the world. Well, 2nd most.

Which race are they being racist toward in opposing the Iran deal, out of curiosity?

All races that aren't the "French" race! Racist isn't the right word, but I felt bigoted was too nice. They are very discriminatory against people from the middle east, and especially Muslims. They would be against Iran (or any Islamic country) from changing the colors of their flag, or changing their national flower.

Potato, potato. Damn, that doesn't work in text.

This is going to sound really stupid, so be patient with me. I don't believe in race. I believe in culture, instead. There are plenty of people of African decent in America that aren't a part of the African-American culture. And there are plenty of white Americans that are. Race is a genetic thing that makes it easy for people to judge without ever hearing you share your views, shake your hand, or even look you in the eye. Culture is what you are.

Very true. I've always written it "po-tay-toe, po-tah-toe" when trying to do that. 8-)

Chaos in Lausanne. US say #IranTalks will go into Wednesday, French FM @LaurentFabius & German FM Steinmeier say they're leaving at 6am.
