The coverage was odd, breaking away mid-sentence, and mid-shot for commercials and breaking back in mid-sentence (not that there was anything to miss). I would rather watch table tennis or badminton or something.

Olympic golf is the worst idea ever.
The problem is that you actually watched. I'm not annoyed at all. Haven't even seen a flicker of it on my television screen. And it sounds like you are knocking table tennis. Watching Olympic table tennis is awesome.
Oh no. I would LOVE to watch table tennis over golf. Like I said, I can fall asleep to golf every Sunday. I would find Olympic table tennis interesting.
Gotcha. I agree golf is a strange choice.

A world where there's golf but no baseball makes no sense to me.

Thumb wrestling should be an official Olympics event.

I have a lot of trouble watching sports that don't have a lot of scoring or otherwise impactful plays/moments. Soccer and hockey are really boring to me because of how rarely they score. I also don't watch baseball because the game feels slow to me. I like golf a bit more, though it's a fairly tame and slow sport and basically violates the rule I just stated.

I think I'd like soccer a lot if they just had more scoring. Maybe if the goal were bigger or if there were no goalies allowed or something. Some kind of "extreme" soccer where the final score would be 14-11 or whatever. I realize that my ideas are stupid and that tons of people love the sport as-is; just saying that it doesn't really work for me.

The solution for soccer is easy--smaller field, less players.

C'mon Mori.
Just watch Brasil x Australia.
I'm not a big fan of women's soccer, but the score was 0 x 0 and it was one of the most thrilling games of the year.

The solution for soccer is exactly the opposite - bigger fields for men, smaller fields for women.
If you want to watch a soccer game with less players in a smaller field, just watch indoor soccer. It's great to play, unbearable to watch (unless is some highlight reel of Falcao).

Move the object to the other end and get it in the net, hole, basket, end zone and defend your side. Basketball, hockey, soccer, football, field hockey, rugby, foosball, water polo, polo

Shoot it over the net in the center and keep it inbounds. Tennis, badminton, volleyball, (racquetball, handball sort of).

How is handball in the second category?

It's about hitting the ball back and forth between teams, and you get a point if the other team can't hit it back to you.

I'm not sure which handball you're talking about, but on the olympics, it's this one https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Handball
It's in the first category :)

Ha! That's awesome, I've never heard of that. I'll have to watch some.

The Handball I grew up with is two or four players hitting a small rubber ball against a wall. Sometimes one wall, sometimes 3 or an enclosed room. It's very fast.

The concept is very similar to tennis, hence the sort of disclaimer. Remember Forest grump practicing table tennis? You flip up the other half of the table and it returns your ball so you can practice by yourself. That's basically racketball and handball only you take turns returning it. Cutthroat is where three people play. One serves and the other two are against whoever serves. I used to play racketball everyday in high school and college.

The more you know... :) I've heard of racquetball but not this handball, thanks for explaining you two.

It's cool that there are two very different sports of the same name. And funny that I've never heard of the one that is internationally popular. It's like being a fan of American Football, but never having heard of soccer.

Oh, and the US men's basketball team walloped Argentina after a very slow start (down 10). Next up is Spain on Friday.

I can't bring myself to get very excited about this men's Olympic basketball team. It feels like the old Olympic teams where they just brought a bunch of mediocre alpha dogs (guys like DeRozan and H Barnes and Paul George) who don't actually form a very impressive team. I kind of want them to lose so that the USA will get serious about sending its best guys to the Olympics again.

I can't see them lose. I know they had some close games, but it's more like cat playing with mice. The difference in talent is just humongous, even Barnes and DeRozan would be top players on any other team, easily.
I hope you beat the crap out of Spain (I really don't like Spain in any team sport), and then I'll root for the other team in the finals :)
