Going back to the Sarver "contend in 2020" theory...there are a few things that concern me:
What's our identity now or the one we're building towards? We tried the dual PG experiment and it failed. It looks like we've lucked into Booker, and he and Bledsoe make a decent backcourt on paper, but is that good enough? Defensively? Offensively? Are we trying to outscore teams? Keep them under 95? Play fastbreak basketball? Grind it out in the halfcourt? We need that vision.
The "3 All Stars to contend" comment I kinda get, but don't necessarily agree with. It's a very surface level observation and an easy out. At the very least you need a legit star who can raise up the play of others and coach with a tried and true system. Is it easier with 3 All Stars? Sure, but how many other teams would like to have that kind of roster? And look at the Celtics. They have IT, and a bunch of very good roleplayers (including Al Horford). They have a solid coach with a good system. Are they contenders? Debatable. But they're also doing it without 3 of the top 10-15 players in the league. The Rockets? All Harden with role players like Ariza, Anderson, Gordon, Capela. Which of the Spurs were All-Stars this year? Hell, the Hawks had 4 All-Stars last year and what did it mean?

I would settle for "being taken seriously" first before worrying about contending in 2020 ...
Well, so much for hopes and dreams ...

Haha. I'm sure that's between now, which is "laughing joke" and 2020 "contender".LazarusLong wrote:I would settle for "being taken seriously" first before worrying about contending in 2020 ...

I think you need All-NBA players, not just All-Stars, and a style of play that they can thrive in.

If it makes anyone feel any better, I won 6 championships with the Suns by 2020 back in my NBA2K9 days.
