If you sit down with him and have a solid plan in place to put him in the best situation to succeed that also helps the Suns, I think he will be good soldier. Part of the problem is that I'm sure he feels he is a high level starter in this league, and doesn't want to take a back seat to anyone. But to be that again, he is going to have to accept and embrace a role to build himself back up again. Unfortunately, I think he tried that last season and took his role to the extreme, where he though he was the microwave and only option when he got on the floor. He was shoot first, shoot second, and shoot the Suns out of the game, not take what they give you and build your efficiency. I also think he got too big, to improve his defense, for his body structure and it slowed him down and affected his shot in a way.
It really depends on the personalities of all the players involved. If you sit Brandon down and tell him he is playing and here's how he can earn his minutes back, the yeah, maybe he would be happy. Maybe he doesn't hold a grudge about being benched and then asked to come back and help the team lose. But every guard on the roster outplayed him last season. Is Ulis going to be fine sitting? Even if he is, do we want to take Ulis' minutes and development away? Is the rest of the team going to be OK putting a guy back on the floor who hurt the team so badly last season? If Knight really does play better and we can win with him on the floor, then we are ok. But if he's not better, Booker / Chandler / Jackson are not going to be OK losing games with Knight killing us out there. If we play Bled / Knight / Booker again and take minutes from someone else, they are not going to be happy about that unless he is playing great. He would have to be MUCH better to earn back the trust of the team, IMHO.
And that's not even going into the PR ramifications of going into another season of poor player relations. We have got to rebuild our reputation as a franchise that treats people right.
It might work! Or we might have injuries that force him into the lineup! But I wouldn't risk it. I would try to dump him.
I think of it this way: I would have been willing to take Noah's contract to bring in KP. Similarly, I would be willing to take a hit on Knights contract to help the development of the team we have.
